The contribution to international recycling environment standard standardization Training eco design specialists [July 19, 2011] Professor Lee, Hwa Jo of Mechanical Engineering (56) was nominated as a winner of ‘IEC 1906 Award’ IEC(International Electrotechnical Commission) was founded in 1906 as one of top 3 international standard organizations giving awards by selecting the specialists who have contributed to international standardization each year since 2005 as one of centennial anniversary events. The award winning field of Professor Lee is the recycling environment standardization. It is the contribution of making effort in designs considering environment and development of recycling technology such as the development and comparative evaluation on eco-friendly design guide for re-manufacture of cellular phones, research of standard estimation method on recycling possibility rate of electric & electronic products, data management on entire cycle of product for eco-friendly design, development of Enabling Technology for maximized product recycling, development of cathode-ray tube waste separation and cleansing system, development of scrap car dismantling evaluation software, research of home appliance waste handling process and the development of recycling characteristics evaluation on automotive parts & part categories, etc. Also, Professor Lee is leading in the training of eco design specialists as a person responsible for projects participated by graduate school Mechanical Engineering, Applied Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering as Yeungnam University was selected for 'eco design specialized graduate school' by the Ministry of Environment since 2009. Eco-design means design considering the influence of environment or designing by reducing the malicious effects on the environment from the design stage which is the source of product's birth. This field is getting the spotlight as high quality jobs of next generation as the importance of environment becomes highlighted. In addition, Professor Hong, Seung-Ho of Hanyang University (automated industrial communication), Director Kim, Young-Rok of Hex Power System Technology Laboratory (solar energy), Professor Lee, Jae-Ho of University of Seoul·Team Manager Choi, Sang Mi of Korea Electronics Association (electronic component library design automation), Team Manager Ahn, Hee-Seong of Korea Electrical Engineering & Science Research Institute (radio interference of extra high voltage power transmission), Team Manager Cho, Mi-Ryeong of KILT (backlight unit related display for LCD), Senior Researcher Kim, Jae-Hyun of Korea Institute of Machiner & Materials (semiconductor related to MEMS material compression characteristics), Professor Shin and Hyung-Seop of Andong University (room temperature tensile characteristics of super conductor), etc have received the honor of award. Accordingly, Korea has placed 5th followed by Japan, England, United States and Germany by producing 9 award winners among a total of 124.

Participation of 41 teams, Successfully completes the 16th Baja Sae Korea on August 9th [July 9, 2011] The 'Baja Sae Korea' which Yeungnam University has opened up for the first time in 1996 with the purpose of raising creativity and spirit of challenge by engineers to apply the theory on the field was held for the 16th time this year. The festival of automotive engineering students which became a de facto international tournament by obtaining a certificate of United States SAE (Society of Automotive Engineering) in 2001 was started on July 6th and dropped the curtain of heated contest with the endurance race on the 9th. This contest where 41 teams participated has performed entrance of car shed on 6th, static inspection on 7th along with opening ceremony, Gyeongsan downtown car parade and dynamic inspection on 8th. Especially the ‘Rock Crawling’ attempted for 5th time this year had produced various things to see. While an elliptical shaped rock obstacle of 5m in width and 1.5m in height with course length of 10~15m is installed and the team that has passed through this within shortest period of time gets the highest score in order to test the transmission speed of engine power, there was an accident of all participants failing last year. This year, only 1 team has passed so that there is a criticism of 'difficult course' where safe passage itself is the key. On the 9th which was the last day, the ‘endurance race' which is the highlight of this tournament was held at the back hill of Yeungnam University filtration plant. In the middle of pouring rain started from early in the morning, the tournament continued as scheduled even in bad weather of pouring heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightening. As soon as the start flag of tournament chairman was raised at 10:50 AM, the muddy water started splashing from all over as the self made cars lined up to wait their turns started running by gushing out their loud engine sounds. The 35 cars were started in order to spread the race of 180 minutes with Cheoma DM (Car No. 9) that had placed first in the 'acceleration' category of Dynamic Test performed on the previous day at the front. The endurance race is a category in which the victory is determined depending on who turns most number of 4km off-road track within given time. The drivers of self made cars are having quite a bit of difficulty in securing their field of vision from the goggles mixed up with muddy water and sweat. Also, the suspension system of car and driving skill are more important than simple speed because the surface of unpaved track is slippery, has a lot of steep turns and is a mountain trail with severe unevenness. Needless to say that the car must have good power of engine in order to finish three hour's race by crossing 5 layered obstacles with steep slope here and there. If there are small and large accidents such as engine stopping, deviating from the track or slipping from the hill in the middle of race, the referees stop the race for a moment by waving a red flag and the volunteers must run in immediately to push the car off the track for the race to resume. Although the cars that broke down resume the race after getting repaired from the pit, they naturally get behind in the race because they lost that much time. Therefore, the driver and all team members rush in to fix the car in order to reduce the time remained in the pit. So it is the moment when teamwork and promptness are also very important. At 1:50 PM of this day, the heated contest for three days has dropped the curtain with the flag to finish the endurance race. The closing ceremony was held at the main stadium of Yeungnam University from 5 PM. As a result of adding up the scores from all categories including static inspection, dynamic inspection and endurance race, the honor of overall victory given to the team with highest score went to the No. 29 MIRACLE-Blue team of Hanbat University. To the winning team, the Minister of Knowledge Economy award, championship flag, trophy and prize of 3 million won were given. In addition, the No. 6 T.E.M11 team of Ulsan University that has placed second received the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do award and prize of 2 million won and No.30 MIRACLE-Red team of Hanbat University that has placed third received President of Yeungnam University award and prize of 1 million won. The result of tournament will be announced throughout the world through official homepage of SAE (www.sae.org) and publications.

Despite the sign of heat wave recording 27℃from the morning, about 80 students dreaming of getting into UN affiliated organizations or international organizations have filled the lecture hall. Inspector Kim invited as speaker is Class of 81 who entered Chemistry Department of Yeungnam University and Class 23 of ROTC. He is standing in front of his younger alumni as he lives a new life of an international public official at Hague, Netherlands where OPCW is located since 2005 after wrapping up the life of a military officer for about 20 years. His main duties are to perform inspection and investigation activities related to chemical weapons by going around about 180 OPCW member countries. He says the days spent abroad are as many as 200 per year from performing important duties as an inspection team manager. The reason why he went through the trouble of visiting Yeungnam University in his busy schedule was because there was something he really wanted to say to the younger students. He wanted to let them know that opportunities come for sure if you draw a bigger picture toward a greater world by escaping from the \'frog in a small pond\' mentality. “You never know what kind of international organization will appear all the sudden within international state of affairs getting changed each day. The OPCW which I\'m working for is also the one created all the sudden as a result of Strategic Arms Reduction Talks between United States and Soviet Union in 1997. So the new employment reaching up to about 500 people took place at the time and the many people who were working in the field of chemistry caught the opportunity of getting into an international organization. So you should also prepare for this. The opportunity will surely come someday even if it might be right now.” The method of getting into an international organization he had presented was more simple than expected. In case of UN for instance, they give employment announcement for 2 months through internet homepage and all you have to do is submit an application through e-mail by selecting the area of work which is appropriate for your major. However, it is necessary to well package your experience and motive for applying according to the qualifications required by each organization. In fact, you can become an employee of international organization if you pass the first interview over e-mail or phone and the final interview on the spot after submitting the documents. He emphasized that it is worth the challenge by saying \"just being selected as a interview candidate is a great fortune because most international organizations pay for the flight and lodging as well as the daily wage for the interview period during the interview on the spot\". The employment of international organizations is limited to the citizens of member states. But it is same as having no entrance barrier since our country has joined most international organizations. According to Yeungnam University on 22nd, the team of Professor Yoon, Hyung-Don of Biotechnology Department has developed a bio sensor to see the change of \'copper\' (Cu) content with your eyes by adopting unnatural amino acid ‘L-DOPA’ in Green Fluorescent Protein using genetic-code engineering. The thesis related to this was issued on June online edition of a famous international journal called 《Angewante Chemie》with impact factor as high as 11.8 in the field of chemistry. Copper is one of microelements playing an important role inside animals and plants. Especially, the deficiency of this causes anemia, bone disorder or nerve disorder, etc in human body and the intake must be limited in case of Wilson\'s disease. It also becomes a quite important index indicating the level of soil contamination. Therefore, while measuring the amount of copper contained inside the body or soil is very important for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or improvement on soil contamination, a simple and prompt measurement is made possible through this research. Especially, the new technology of Professor Yoon\'s team is noteworthy from the fact that it has increased the utilization of Green Fluorescent Protein even more. Green Fluorescent Protein is widely used in measuring the revelation degree of genes in living cells, protein-protein interaction, structural change of protein and in measuring the location of protein, etc. It became a candidate for Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 due to such importance. But the research of Professor Yoon\'s team is primarily the bio sensor on a specific heavy metal called \'copper\' and the opened possibility of developing and utilizing as a bio sensor reacting to heavy metals other than copper. So far, he has presented about 20 theses on SCI level journals such as 《Chemical Communications》 or 《Bioconjugate Chemistry》 and was recognized for the outstanding academic ability as he received the \'rookie academic award\' from the Korean Society of Biotechnology and Bioengineering at the end of last year. This research was performed for 2 years as Professor Ayyadurai (N. Ayyadurai, 33) from India researching and lecturing at the Biotechnology Department of Yeungnam University , Prabhu (N.S. They announced mid and long-term R&D guidelines in 15 main sectors in order to secure the future green energy market. A total of 26 trillion won will be invested to 2030 in 15 main green energy sectors including solar power, fuel cells, wind energy, green cars, and smart grids. The government\'s goal through this roadmap is to increase the current share of the global green energy market of 1.2% to 18% by 2030. In addition, it is planning to create 1.5 million new jobs. It is thus expected that the industry related to domestic green energy R&D will become busier and the demand for experts on green energy will also grow drastically. At such point, Yeungnam University (president Lee, Hyo-soo) is rising as a hub of South Korea for \'fostering experts and R&D in green energy\'. The contest was divided into the control and steering safety sector race, acceleration performance sector race, and driving performance sector race. The \'control and steering safety sector race\' checked the passing technologies and time for the slaloms (obstacles), and the \'acceleration performance sector race\' was conducted by measuring the driving time for a 200m interval. The \'driving performance sector race\' checked how fast a 45km distance was completed. In result, Chunma DM scored high in all sectors and won first place, despite it being the first time to compete in this contest and won the Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs award. They also received prize money of 3 million won. Fitting to its team name, \'Dream Maker\', the Chunma DM team was able to take a step closer to their dreams in the future automobile sector. <BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Expert in mobile communications, published 55 international theses and possesses 17 patents both domestic and abroad [May 30, 2011] Professor Choi, Kwon-hyu (41, photo) of the Department of Information and Communication Engineering was recently appointed as a senior member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), which is the world\'s largest organization specializing in electrics, electronics, telecommunications, and computers sectors. By being appointed as a senior member, Professor Choi was not only internationally recognized for his research achievements, but was also recognized for his qualifications to be active side-by-side with global scholars. He will participate in major panel meetings of the IEEE, while also being active as a recommendation and candidate screening committee member for new senior members. Senior members of the IEEE who have lifelong tenures are made up of IEEE members comprised of engineers, scientists and technology executives of companies having at least 10 years in specialized fields and are selected through strict screening processes for candidates with continuous and considerable achievements for at least five years. Five years or more achievements refer to IEEE international theses or international patents and one can only become a candidate with the recommendation of at least three IEEE fellows or senior members, making it very difficult to qualify. In result, IEEE senior members make up only 8% of the total members. Professor Choi published 55 international theses including the IEEE top journal (IEEE TCOM, IEEE TVT, IEEE CL, etc) in the mobile communications sector. He already registered 17 patents including six international patents through industry-academic projects with mobile communication businesses, and thus his academic contribution as well as practical research contribution was highly assessed. After receiving his PhD, Choi worked at the ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunication Research Institute) broadband wireless communication research team for three years and then became a professor at the YU Department of Information and Communication Engineering in 2003. He is currently the supervisor of the \'BK21 Personnel Fostering Project\' and has led the highest ranking in performance in Korea for two straight years. In addition, he is focusing on teaching students in the mobile communications sector such as winning the \'JCCI award\', the highest award in the Korea Information and Communications Society together with his students in 2007. Meanwhile, the IEEE is a non-profit organization with over 360,000 technical experts from 175 countries around the world as members, and it is also called Eye-triple-E.
