In this region, Yeungnam University Law School will be officially launched on the 8th. Yeungnam University (president Tong-ki Woo) will hold the opening ceremony of its Law School at the main auditorium on the 3rd floor of the Law School Library at 11am on the 8th. In this event, Kim Beom-il mayor of Daegu, Kim Gwan-yong governor of Gyeongbuk-do and ministers and representatives from major institutes in the region, as well as heads of 29 organizations that finalized exchange agreements, 12 institutions and 58 individuals that donated scholarships, and 21 special advisors are expected to participate in the opening ceremony of the Yeungnam University Law School. Meanwhile, 70 future lawyers that dream about protecting the rights of the socially marginalized and people who are discriminated against will enroll at Yeungnam University Law School (Dean Bae Byeong-il) in March. In order to help fulfill their dreams, Yeungnam University prepared 30 credit hours specialized in fostering legal experts for the socially marginalized such as areas with no lawyers, multi-cultural families and foreign laborers. In order for \'human rights and public interest\', public interest theory, fair trade law, agriculture law, consumer law, environment law, human rights basic theory, international human rights law, international humanity law, education and human rights, medicine and human rights seminar, NGO law seminar, human rights and Confucian society, etc are to be opened. Through agreements with 29 organizations and law firms including the National Human Rights Commission, Ministry of Government Legislation, Korean Legal Aid Corporation and Kim & Chang Law Firm, on-hand education was improved, while courses such as WTO laws, international economics law, EU laws, international trade laws, etc are to be opened in preparation of the opening of the Korean law market so that students can train their international skills. The faculty consists of instructors with various experience such as judges, public prosecutors, military law officers, foreign lawyers, etc. Through open and special employments, a total of 28 full-time professors including 2 foreign faculty members were procured. 3 more are expected to be hire by March in order to start the new semester with 31 professors. Three chair-professors, Bae Gi-weon (former supreme court judge), Jeong Sang-myeong (former attorney general) and Choi Song-hwa (honorary professor at SNU) will be responsible for improving the on-hands legal education. Professor Bae Byeong-il (51), dean of Yeungnam University Law School, stated \"By fostering legal experts with international competitiveness and work skills, we will greatly contribute to improving the welfare of the area and to minimizing legal blind sides.\" Facilities include a five story-high Law School building and a three story-high Law School library. In addition, a law school dorm that can accommodate the entire law school student body was newly constructed as well. There are dorms made especially for married students, while child care is also provided through agreements with Gyeongsan Kindergarten. Furthermore, in order to allow students to concentrate on their studies, Yeungnam University procured scholarship funds as well. In result, there are plans to provide over 50% in scholarships of tuitions to the entire student body.

He is Park Ki-hoon (23, photo, left, instructor Jo Gyeong-hyeon), a senior at the Yeungnam University school of Biotechnology. This is the first thesis that revealed that the proteins extracted from fall webworms (Hyphantria cunea) could be transformed using bio-engineering technologies to use for treatment of arteriosclerosis. This thesis will be in the December, 2008 issues of the prominent international academic journal, \'Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology\' that is published by Elsevier company of the US. It is very rare that an undergraduate student is able to put their name on an SCI international academic journal as the primary author. <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_03917841096495524 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2009-01-19_10-10-42_379.jpg\" target=_blank> It is especially meaningful because the journal in which the thesis is being placed on is the second most influential and prominent journal in the related field. Considering the sweat and effort that was invested in this, this result may only have been obvious. Last year around this time, he did not take any days off and had no vacation investing all of his time making tests on the functions and structures of human serum protein and fall webworm proteins. After one year of working with cells in order to evaluate the effects of arteriosclerosis cell models, he discovered the possibilities of developing treatments for arteriosclerosis and placed his name on an SCI level internationally prominent academic journal. Profess or Jo Gyeong-hyeon (40), who has been instructing him for three years showed how proud he was of this student saying, \"I am only surprised of how sincere and diligent he is conducting his research, which is not seen very often among undergraduate students.\" He comes to school every day at 8am and leaves the lab past 9pm. His colleagues call him \'Kant of the school of Biotechnology\' and his main interest is in developing a pre-diagnosis kit and treatment for cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, a main cause of sudden death among Korean adults, are potentially innate in 60% of the adult population and it is the leading cause of death for any single disease. Myocardial infarction is a disease that can only be diagnosed after it has progressed for a long time and therefore, there is a high need for a kit that can predict this early and make diagnostics. Since last summer, he has begun making comparative studies on the blood of myocardial infarction patients and the blood of normal people in order to develop a myocardial infarction bio-marker. He is a senior and in order to continue his studies, he has submitted an application at Yeungnam University graduate school of biotechnology and a MS/Ph.D course. He said, \"I first selected my major as biotechnology because I became interested in it after watching the movie Jurassic Park, but it was difficult because movies and reality was very different. However, after I started doing tests full time, I became confident that this was the path I wanted to take.\" He also added, \"Now, even when I spend my entire day on researching, I don\'t feel tired or that I am wasting my time. As part of the young adult cultural exchange program that Korea\'s Korea-China Culture Association (Future Forest) and the Chinese Communist Youth League, these visitors came to Yeungnam University on the 6th for a Korean-Chinese college student culture performance. In the afternoon of the 6th, they arrived at the Dormitory and about an hour later, they went to the Yeungnam University Law Library 3rd floor where there was welcoming event for them. In this event, there were 50 students from Yeungnam University including international students from China, Yeungnam University students who went to colleges in China as exchange students and representatives from the Yeungnam University student body. In the cultural performance following the banquet, clubs at University welcomed the Chinese students with extravagant dance performances, wushu demonstrations, folk performance and classic guitar performances. The Chinese students also sang folk songs of Chinese ethnic minority groups and also performed traditional dance performances of Korean Chinese and sang the Beijing Olympic theme song. Moon Hye-young (23, senior in Chinese and Chinese literature), who went to the Beijing University of Education said, \"There were many worries that they anti-Korean sentiment of China may have an effect on this event, but after meeting these students, I was totally relieved from this.\" She also stated, \"There are many things that we college students need to collaborate in for the future of the two nations, as well as the future of East Asia. I have come to believe that we will be able to work better together in the future.\" They also visited the \'Korean Chinese College Student Forum\' at Kyunghee University on the 5th and agreed to work in diplomatic cooperation for preventing and delaying desertification. The Chinese Communist Youth League has first established as the Socialist Youth League of China in Shanghai in August 1920, before the founding of the Communist Party of China. Since establishment of the Communist Party of China in July 1921, it was recomposed as an organization under the communist party in May 1922 and in 1925, its name was changed to the Chinese Communist Youth League. During the war against Japan, it was also called the Chinese Democratic Youth League and after establishing the new nation, its name was changed to the Chinese New Democracy Youth League. However, in 1957, its name was once again changed to the Chinese Communist Youth League. The Chinese Communist Youth League was once in its dark ages and had all of its operations suspended during the Culture Revolution. In October 1978, it held its 10th National Representative Conference and it finally began to be more strongly established. There are currently a total of 35.7 million members between the age of 14 and 25 in the Chinese Communist Party.

On the 30th, Yeungnam University received a notice that it was selected as an outstanding case for the \'2008 project for expanding employment support functions\' from the Daegu Office of Labor (director Lee Wan-young). According to this, it was judged that the \'Yeungnam University Job Fair\' should be shared because of its high business performance in the fact that it gave actual help to students in the job market and companies, with participants of this function being highly satisfied. In the \'2008 Yeungnam University Job Fair\', 48 companies and 5,000 students visited the function for two days from September 3 to 4 at the \'Lee Hee-geon Memorial Hall\'. On the 1st floor was the employment event hall composed of the employment support hall, consulting hall, free pictures for resumes, job psychology examinations and tarot card job fortunes. Professor Park Jin-ho (50, Display and Chemical Engineering), chief of the Yeungnam University Student Ability Development Department, stated, \"By providing students with more job opportunities and providing companies with opportunities to hire competent human resources, we have held job fairs for the third consecutive year in order to resolve the imbalance of supply and demand for human resources.\" He also added, \"doors will open to overcome the difficulties with the employment situation at a place where the demand for finding jobs and finding the right candidates.\" Meanwhile, Yeungnam University was selected as a \'project for extending employment support functions\' by the Ministry of Labor for the third consecutive year and also received the highest national treasury funding for the third straight year. In 2006, it was selected as an outstanding case by the Ministry of Labor for the \'Employment Frontier Journalists\' and \'Employment Capability Improvement School\'. This parade of bikes passed through the Commerce and Economy Hall and the Humanities Hall and officially pronounced the launching of the \'bike commuters group\'. In addition, there was an art-bike event to promote bike-riding. Yeungnam University (president Tong-ki Woo) sold 600 bicycles to students and faculty under the catch-phrase \'Environment-Friendly Energy University\'. Yeungnam University was selected from the Ministry of Public Administration And Security in June for testing the use of bicycles and has invested 50 million won to purchase 600 bicycles. Applications were received from students and faculty of the university from the 17th to the 23rd. There were 1,657 applications and 150,000 won bicycles were sold to the 600 chosen at 45,000 won. In addition, there were 50,000 won hope bikes (recycled bikes) sold at 25,000 won a piece. Yeungnam University is planning to increase the bicycle use rate that is currently at 4.2% to 12.5% by 2011. In order to do so, a total of 2.4 billion won is expected to be invested to build a 5.2km bike street and 3,000 bike parking lots. In addition, there will be 1,200 public bikes for use. Moreover, there are plans in place to provide a pleasant campus environment by designating \'bike-only trails\'. Park Young-mok (49, civil engineering), director of the facility management office, stated \"Using bikes will have many good effects such as lower transportation costs, improved fitness, reduced congestion, improved environment and conserving energy.\" He also added, \"When Subway line 2 is extended in 2011, there will be more people using bikes in campus and so we will concentrate on establishing infrastructure for bike commuters.\" Meanwhile, Yeungnam University has received 100 million won in national funding by being selected as a test institution for using bikes from the Ministry of Public Administration And Security in June. Yeungnam University (president Tong-ki Woo) was selected by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy as a Regional Innovation Center (hereinafter called RIC) in June and on the 27th, an opening ceremony for the \'Daekyeong Solar Cell/Module Materials and Process RIC\' will be held on the 2nd floor international conference center of the Gyeongbuk Techno Park. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Gyeongsangbuk-do province, city of Daegu, Gyeongbuk TP, Daegu Gyeongbuk Science Technology Center and The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Evaluation and Planning will participate in this event, which is expected to be an opportunity to accelerate promotion of the regional solar energy industry. Professor Jung Jae-hak (46, School of Display and Chemical Engineering), RIC center director is expected to present a new growth force for the region in preparation of the \'anti-fossil fuel era\' through presentations on \'the trends and development plans of the regional solar cell industry\'. Yeungnam University is planning to invest a total of 16.6 billion won including 7 billion in national treasury funds for the next 10 years in the only RIC specializing in the solar energy sector. There will also be plans to pursue industry-academic projects linking Gyeongbuk Techno Park, Pohang Techno Park and Yeungnam University Venture Business Support Center such as venture business support program operations, solar energy project equipment establishment and service support, key technology demand investigation, R&D support and \'double majors\' in college for fostering expert manpower, reeducation of corporate employees, international standard and certification procedure education, product certification support, etc. The strategy is to use this in order to establish an industrial complex related to solar cell/modules integrating 15 main companies and 60 cooperative companies within a 20km radius and to become international competitiveness by merging with IT technology of Gumi. There are also plans to benchmark leading solar energy research centers such as the US FSEC (Florida Solar Energy Center). On this, Professor Jung stated, \"There is a dire need to develop alternate energy and foster related industries to overcome the crisis with the rising oil prices. According to the recently announced results of the AFPK (Associate Financial Planner Korea) certification exams, students who took the AFPK course at Yeungnam University recorded a passing rate of 79.2%. This is 2.8 times higher than the national average of 28.5%. \'AFPK\' certification is a prerequisite for becoming a \'CFP (Certified Financial Planner)\', which is the dream of everyone in the finance industry. This is because CFP certification exams require an AFPK to qualify for testing. CFPs are number one in job preference in the US. It has recently become more popular in Korea as well. It is expected that after the capital market integration act is passed in the future, 50,000 CFPs will be needed. However, there are only about 1,000 CFP certificate holders in Korea. Thus, the value of AFPK holders, which is a prerequisite for becoming CFPs, are rising. In reality, AFPK certificate holders are given priority for employment in some finance institutes. Thus, competition is becoming higher. However, there are some things that are required prior to acquiring an AFPK certificate. They are required to complete an 80 hour course at educational institutes designated by the Korea FPSB (Financial Planning Standard Board Korea). Yeungnam University School of Economics and Finance was the first provincial college to be designated for AFPK education last May. Since then, the first AFPK course program was held from last October to this February. 41 of 58 students passed and there had a passing rate of 75%, which was 2.7 times higher than the national average at 28%. In the second AFPK course program from May to August, 42 of 53 students passed. This was a 4% increase in passing rates compared to the first program term. This program is free while the instructors all hold CFP certificates. There are also supplementary courses and practice tests for preparation of AFPK certification exams. There are also study groups in order to provide well-organized educational support outside of classes. In result, there is no need go to Seoul to search for private academies or take online classes to prepare for employment at finance institutes. Job-seekers now have doors open to low-cost, high-efficiency education. But now, we can choose a course that we want.\" Son Dae Hyung (36, Bujeok-ri, Abnyang-myeon) lives near Yeungnam University and is happy to see signs installed around the campus. He, his wife and his four year old daughter can easily choose a hiking course to fully appreciate the autumn season. Yeungnam University (president Tong-Ki Woo) installed a total of 86 signs for seven hiking courses around campus. Each sign shows the entire hiking course together with maps, pictures, total distance, distance by interval and time required while walking. For this project, employees from the facilities administration office walked along the seven courses repeatedly last summer break. While walking they took pictures of the surrounding scenery and also made accurate measurements of distance and time required. The course names suggest the scenery. Courses include \'Love Road\' (1.5km) for loving couples and families, \'Folk Village\' (0.7km) course where hikers can take a look at the lifestyles of our ancestors in the past, \'Forest Love\' I (3.1km) and II (6.5km) course where you can get a taste of the refreshing feel of forests, \'Samcheonji\' (3.6km) where you can view the magnificent sceneries of lotus flowers in the summer, \'Pond\' (1.8km) course where you can relax and enjoy at the pond under the shades of weeping willows, as well as the \'Cheonmaro\' (2.5km) course where you can walk along the artery of Yeungnam University. Yoon Joo-il (54), manager of the facility administration office campus management team stated that his team walked each course at least 10 times and installed signs for the trails in order to share the beautiful natural environment of the campus with visitors and the community.
