On the 26th, YU held the launching ceremony for Social Contribution Group’s Overseas Volunteer Team. In January next year, YU will make public diplomacy activities through volunteer work and cultural exchange in Vietnam and Cambodia. Active support by YU to strengthen core competencies of “Global citizen” [December 29, 2023] <The launching ceremony for 40th Overseas Volunteer Team was held at YU Chunma Art Center.> YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) Social Contribution Group has begun preparations for dispatching the overseas volunteer team for global contribution. On the 26th, the launching ceremony for 40th Overseas Volunteer Team was held at LEE Si-won Global Convention Hall of Chunma Art Center. The YU Overseas Volunteer Team is a student volunteer group representing the school and, since 2001, it has been dispatched around the world every semester to carry out volunteer work. To date, about 2,840 people have volunteered around the world. A total of 44 volunteers from the 40th Overseas Volunteer Team will be dispatched to Vietnam and Cambodia on two occasions in January 2024. This volunteer team plans to be dispatched to Ho Chi Minh and Dalat in Vietnam and Phnom Penh and Kampong Cham in Cambodia for two weeks to carry out volunteer work and conduct cultural exchanges with local residents.Students will visit local orphanages and educational institutions to carry out educational volunteer work and have the time to experience and understand the cultures of each country by playing traditional games in Korea, Vietnam, and Cambodia with students from Da Lat National University in Vietnam and Western University in Cambodia. KIM Gyu-min (3rd year, Dep’t of English Education), who was selected as the team leader of the volunteer team dispatched to Cambodia on January 14th, said, “I look forward to gaining new experiences and opportunities for growth through educational volunteer work. I will raise the status of YU and Korea by carrying out fruitful volunteer work in Cambodia with his team members.” YU’s overseas volunteer activities are supported by YU medical staff, too.The volunteer medical team consisting of doctors, nurses, and nutritionists plans to carry out medical volunteer work in cooperation with medical staff at local hospitals in Cambodia and also provide education to local residents on disease management and prevention. President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “Global social contribution activities demonstrate YU’s example of public diplomacy and overseas volunteer work provides students with a valuable experience in fulfilling their roles and responsibilities as citizens of the Republic of Korea, which has become an advanced country, and sincerely conveying their warm hearts to all corners of the world. I hope that students will grow into talented people with a global perspective and the basic knowledge of global citizens through overseas volunteer work and YU will not spare any effort in developing and supporting various domestic and international social contribution programs in the future.” Meanwhile, YU Social Contribution Group was started with a launching ceremony in November 2022 to achieve “a creative and innovative university that contributes to the prosperity of human society.” It runs various programs ranging from small contribution activities to be made in the surroundings to global contribution activities including in/out-campus various social contribution activities and contribution & cultural exchange activities with dispatch of overseas volunteer team such as campus clean-up activities, sharing activities for the socially disadvantaged, and volunteer activities linked to local volunteer centers.

Yeungnam Saemaul Scholarship Association was formed in 2003 to support the studies of juniors, centered on alumni who received “Saemaul Scholarship” and studied at YU Department of Community Development (currently the Department of Saemaul International Development) and President CHOI Oe-chool of YU led establishment of the scholarship society and continues to run it as the chairman. Since the establishment of the scholarship association, scholarship has been given to juniors every year, and so far, KRW 258.5 million of scholarship has been given to 274 people, including KRW 10 million on this day. Korea Publishing Editor Award was established and has been given by Korean Publishing Foundation starting in 2022 to highly evaluate the contributions in editorial planners who are actually leading the publishing culture and at the same time to inspire pride in publishing editors. Director LEE Jong-baek is the planning editor of YU Publishing Division, has published over 600 types of academic books and liberal arts books in the fields of humanities, society, nature, and the arts for 34 years, has been leading publishing and editing books related to Korean studies and humanities and excellent writings in each field, and was recognized for his contribution in development of academic publishing.Representative projects include <History of Korean Cultural Thought> (4 volumes), <Compendium of Korea, China, and Japan> (6 volumes), and the complete collection of <Toegye Poetry Interpretation>, which interprets all 2,000 poems written by Toegye LEE Hwang in Korean ( 9 volumes), <Translation of Zhuxi Poetry> complete works (5 volumes), <Humanities Promotion Series> (33 volumes), <National Culture Research Series and Data Series> (30 volumes), and <Regional Culture Series>. At the “12th International Digital Fashion Contest” hosted by The Society of Fashion & Textile Industry and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, LEE Guk-bin (4th year) from YU Department of Clothing and Fashion won the Grand Prize with the theme of “Nike-Like Digicore 23” and received Award of the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. Selection as “2023 Engineering Education Innovation Meritorious Person” by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy As the director of YU Engineering Education Innovation Center, great contribution in engineering education innovation and cultivation of engineering talents [November 28, 2023] <KANG Dong-jin, Director of YU Engineering Education Innovation Center (Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering) received a commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy.> (First from the left) The innovative achievements in engineering education of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) were recognized externally.Professor KANG Dong-jin of YU Department of Mechanical Engineering (Director of YU Engineering Education Innovation Center) was selected as a person of merit in engineering education innovation in 2023 and received a commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. At the award ceremony held at “2023 Engineering Festival” on the 22nd and hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and managed by Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology and Engineering Education Innovation Council, those who have contributed greatly in innovation of engineering education and cultivation of engineering talent received awards from Engineering Education Innovation Center. <Director KANG Dong-jin of YU Engineering Education Innovation Center (Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering) received a commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. (Professor KANG Dong-jin at the right)> Professor KANG was accepted for expansion and development of engineering education accreditation system since 2008 by Educational Information Committee of Accreditation Board of Engineering Education of Korea, Accreditation Project Group, and Research Center, etc. and for his service as the director of YU Engineering Education Innovation Center since 2014 to develop and operate an innovative engineering education model. He has developed and has been operating GCDP (global capstone design program), which is an international engineering education model consisting of video lectures, team activities, and contests by Korea, Japan, and Thailand since 2020 and was accepted for contribution in future-oriented engineering talents by developing an education model combined with practice training through “ 1/5 Scale Self-Driving Car Contest for University Students” since 2022. Professor KANG Dong-jin said, “This is a valuable achievement based on YU’s excellent engineering education infrastructure and know-how.I will continue to focus on developing and operating engineering education models to cultivate customized talents required by the industry.”

After one year, KRW 10 million to YU again LEE Chan-won Scholarship Fund, cumulative amount of KRW 65 million Selection of 15 2nd- Class Scholarship Students and donation of scholarship in April of this year [November 14, 2023] <On the 11th, LEE Chan-won's Mom Fan Club donated KRW 10 million of scholarship money to YU, LEE Chan-won’s alma mater> Positive influence of Singer Lee Chan-won reaches YU (President CHOI Oe-chool), his alma mater.LEE Chan-won's Mom Fan Club donated KRW 10 million of scholarship money to YU, LEE Chan-won’s alma mater. After donating KRW million in October last year, they visited YU for the fourth year and donated scholarships. In the morning of the 11th, Chairman OH Jun of LEE Chan-won's Mom Fan Club and the members from all over the country visited YU and delivered KRW 10 million of scholarship money, asking for it to be used for students. Chairman OH Joon said, “It has already been four years since the mom fan club first came together to give a meaningful gift ahead of LEE Chan-won’s birthday.The good influence started from singer LEE Chan-won was transmitted to his fans all over the country and we gathered here. We will continue to support LEE Chan-won’s great performances and YU students.” YU named the scholarship donated by LEE Chan-won's Mom Fan Club as the “LEE Chan-won Scholarship Fund” and is using it as student scholarship.In March of last year, the first class of LEE Chan-won Scholarship Students were selected and scholarships were given to them, and this year, 15 scholarship students including one from the Faculty of Economics and Finance in which LEE Chan-won belonged were selected and LEE Chan-won Scholarship was given.At the scholarship award ceremony held last April, the members of LEE Chan-won's Mom Fan Club attended and encouraged the scholarship students with donation of scholarships. Special Vice-President HEO Chang-deok of YU said, “I would like to express my gratitude to the members of the Mom’s Fan Club who visit us every year to support YU. I will do my best so that YU students may become the talents for development of our society by receiving the positive energy of the Mom’s Fan Club members who love LEE Chan-won and YU.”
